Custom-moulded vs. one-size grillz

Short answer

At Grillz Toronto, the short answer is: custom-moulded grillz are cast from an impression of your own teeth, so they clip on securely, sit flush against your gum line and look natural; one-size grillz are pre-shaped to a generic tooth curve and held in place only by clenching or glue. Custom costs more upfront but fits better, lasts longer and is the only safe option for everyday wear.

The quick answer

The difference between custom-moulded and one-size grillz comes down to one question: whose teeth were they shaped around? Custom-moulded grillz, like every piece made at Grillz Toronto, start with an impression of your actual teeth, so the finished metal fits your bite exactly — no clenching, no glue, no gaps for food to collect in. One-size grillz are stamped or cast in a handful of generic curves meant to loosely approximate an average set of teeth, then sold off a rack or online in small, medium or large. They can look convincing in a photo, but in the mouth they rely on you biting down to hold shape, which is uncomfortable for more than a few minutes and never looks quite right.

If you're deciding between the two, it helps to walk through fit, materials, appearance, cost and lifespan side by side — which is exactly what this guide does. You can see the full range of custom options in our styles gallery or start building a set in the customiser.

How each one is made

Custom-moulded grillz begin with a dental-grade impression of your teeth, taken either at our studio or, across the GTA, during a home visit — or sent to us by mail using an impression kit from anywhere in Canada. That mould becomes a plaster model of your exact teeth, which our bench then waxes, casts and finishes by hand in the metal and style you've chosen. Every cap is unique to you; even a sibling or a friend with similar-looking teeth couldn't wear your grillz comfortably.

One-size grillz skip that step entirely. A manufacturer makes a small set of mould shapes — typically three or four sizes — and casts or stamps grillz in volume from those generic shapes. There's no impression, no model of your mouth, and no adjustment to your specific bite. What you receive is whatever shape was closest to "average" in their catalogue.

Fit and comfort

This is where the two options diverge the most. A custom-moulded grill from Grillz Toronto clips onto your teeth the same way a retainer does — it slides over the tooth surface, held by the natural contours of your own teeth, and sits securely whether your mouth is open, closed, talking or eating (even though we still recommend taking grillz out to eat). There's no gap between the metal and your gum line, which means less room for food or bacteria to get trapped and less irritation over a long day of wear.

A one-size grill, by contrast, has to be forced to stay in place. Because it wasn't shaped around your teeth, it typically needs to be bitten down on to hold its position, or supplemented with denture adhesive or wax — neither of which is designed for repeated use in the mouth. The result is a grill that can shift while talking, feels bulky against the gums, and in many cases simply falls out mid-conversation.

Materials and durability

Because custom pieces are made to order rather than mass-produced, there's no cost pressure to cut corners on metal. At Grillz Toronto, every custom grill is solid metal all the way through — solid 925 silver, dental chrome, or 10K, 14K and 18K gold — never a thin shell or plating over a base metal. See exact per-tooth pricing on our pricing page.

One-size grillz are almost always made to hit a low price point, which usually means thin gold-tone or silver-tone plating over brass, nickel or another base metal. Plating wears through with normal use, especially anywhere the grill flexes to clip onto teeth that don't quite match its shape. Once the plating is gone, what's underneath can irritate gums or even cause a reaction for people with metal sensitivities.

Appearance and natural look

A grill that was built from your own teeth naturally follows your tooth shape, spacing and gum line, so the finished piece reads as part of your smile rather than an obvious add-on. Custom work also opens up design options that only make sense on a true-to-fit base — open-face cuts, fang points, engraving, or icing with moissanite or diamonds, all shown in our styles lineup — because the fit underneath is solid enough to support detailed work.

A one-size grill, sized to an average curve rather than your mouth, tends to look slightly off even from a short distance — too wide in spots, too narrow in others, or sitting proud of the gum line where a custom piece would tuck in flush. It's a visible tell that's hard to disguise, no matter how nice the metal looks on its own.

Cost comparison

One-size grillz are cheaper upfront, often under $50 for a full set, and that's their main selling point. Custom grillz at Grillz Toronto start at $90 per tooth for solid silver, $110 for dental chrome, and run from $320 to $540 per tooth for 10K, 14K and 18K gold, with iced silver from $180 and iced gold from $450 per tooth — see full numbers and worked examples in how much do grillz cost in Toronto.

The price gap reflects real differences in material and labour, not markup for its own sake: solid metal costs more than plated base metal, and a hand-cast, hand-finished piece takes a lot more bench time than a mould pulled from a mass-production die. Many clients also start with a single tooth or a smaller set to manage cost, then build up over time — something that isn't really possible with a mass-produced one-size kit, which is sold as a fixed set.

Health and safety considerations

Because custom grillz are removable and moulded without any drilling or filing of your natural teeth, properly fitted pieces aren't known to damage healthy teeth when worn with good hygiene — full detail in do grillz damage your teeth?. The close, gap-free fit also makes it easier to keep clean, since there's less room for plaque to hide.

One-size grillz carry more risk on both fronts. The gaps around a poor fit trap food and bacteria more readily, the base metals underneath plating can irritate gums or trigger allergic reactions, and the need to clench or glue a loose grill in place can put uneven pressure on teeth over time. None of this means one-size grillz are dangerous for a single night out, but they're a poor choice for regular or long-term wear.

Which one should you choose?

If you want a grill for a single costume or a one-off photo and don't mind an imperfect fit, a one-size piece is inexpensive and fast. For anything you plan to wear more than once — to events, on a night out, or as a regular part of your look — custom-moulded grillz are the only option that actually fits, stays in place, and holds up over months or years of wear. The upfront cost buys you a piece built specifically for your mouth, in metal that won't flake or tarnish prematurely.

Getting moulded is straightforward wherever you are in the region: visit our studio in Yorkville, book a home visit if you're closer to Oakville or elsewhere in the GTA, or request an impression kit by mail anywhere in Canada. Plain sets are ready in 5–10 days, gold and iced pieces in 10–15 days, with a deposit taken before casting.
